Exploration of the Economics of Poverty 3.1. Introduction A significant body of the literature has been dedicated to examining wide spreading of poverty  and its gradual explosion issues together with pioneering steps in research and practice towards poverty  eradication have created an unprecedented outburst of studies about business literature for poverty  eradication. The following section is a review of literature about how multinationals attend low-income markets where poverty  occurs on a large scale. The review is carried out with a concern about poverty alleviation and some implications and appropriate frameworks for MNCs executives to help to alleviate poverty while selling to the poor. From this viewpoint, the literature review is divided into three main sections: BOP inititiative, buyer behavior and marketing strategies. It examines some key elements of the BOP initiative companies motivation; the BOP business model; the role of micro finance. With a number of successful stories acknowledged in the literature, the sectio n also reviews how to adopt MNCs marketing mix to attend the BOP profitably. 3.2. Part 1: Poverty in Business Perspectives Billions of people living in the extreme poverty, who are in many cases denied access to proper services, energy, water, health, and above all the opportunities to improve their economic and social outlook, is a significant societal problem. Even though the high economic growth of large-population countries, such as China and India, has brought about many job opportunities and brought down the overall poverty  level, it is still not sufficient to reach other targets in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (World Bank, 2004). Along with the increasing concern of NGOs and other non profit organization towards poverty alleviation, business perspectives have been gradually positioned as a useful tool in contributing to poverty reduction. Such interest has appeared to become much more worldwide through being catalyzed by pioneer approaches, both in practice and theory, which have awakened business attention to the problem of poverty. Indeed, there is an abundance of academic literature on the. It appear to have been dissected from all imaginable angles Poverty in business perspectives has a diverse appearance, such as the vast majority of 4 billion people living on less than $1 or $2 a day (Prahalad and Hammond, 2002), poor producers (Karnani, 2007), gender (Thierry, 2007), self-employed poor people, micro entrepreneurs, micro franchisees (Gibson, 2007), employees, business owners, etc. Within these much attention is lately placed not on poverty as a whole but on its attributed and its causes. 3.2.1. Companies Motivation to Attend Low-Income Markets Much of the debate about poverty alleviation has been provoked by suggestions that multinational corporations (MNC) with extensive financial resources are in the best position to lead the process of selling to the poor. The construction of a new image of poverty in business perspectives, for example, is much contributed by the pioneering idea of Prahalad and Hammond (2002) who focus on the large buying power of 4 billion people earning less than $ 2000 each per year at the lowest tier of the economic pyramid â‚ ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" Bottom of the pyramid. Prahalad and Hammond (2002) advise private companies to view poverty as a potential of serving an unexploited, multitrillion-dollar market and alleviating the level of global poverty while still earning a profit. By infusing the profit motive into value creation, the hope is that private companies will take the leading role in serving the BOP and, thus, the purpose of alleviating poverty will more likely succeed. From this follows/Keeping thi s in mind, the main two motivations for profit seeking companies to attend this market is: The opportunity to covert BOP segments purchasing power into profits; and The ability to bring prosperity to the poor, and thus alleviate poverty. This was supported by 3.2.1.1. Purchasing Power and Profitability A key component surrounding literature is that even poor people could be profitable customers. a) Creating New Business Opportunities Such strong view rests on the idea that the potential growth for many multinational (MNC) and medium sized companies does not rest on the low-income market in the developing countries. Instead, its source is the immense size of potential market of $13 trillion at purchasing power parity (PPP) that the two-thirds of the world population with unmet needs are supposed to represent. Projections and demographic trends also indicate that by 2050, more than 85% of the worlds population will fall within this category. This portends an abysmal decline in effective demand. By empowering the poor, businesses naturally create new business opportunities by raising effective demand and consumption levels. b) Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) since it will help to reduce poverty and more importanlty for the company, it will be crucial to their long-term competitiveness and success. One of the most interesting implications of BOP is the radical impact it can have on a companys core business model. .. for instance, claims that organizations which set out to empower poor communities by providing basic education and skills acquisition, improving local human capital, protecting the environment, and developing the culture of accountability and transparency, are practicing some components of CSR which is essential for the long-term sustainability of any company. Indeed, many large corporations have announced CSR benefits that impacts on their profitability and claim it to be a key element of development. Besides, adds that a comprehensive set of CSR policies, practices and programmes incorporated in companys business strategy can increase productivity, contribute to competitiveness, improve staff recruitment and retention rates and create a more positive corporate image. All in all, concludes that d) Government support Political Capital It is obvious that businesses that empower the poor strike a compelling partnership with the government. Most of the time, politicians take undeserved credit for attracting such private investments etc. 3.2.1.2. Poverty Alleviation and Prosperity to the Poor a) Job Creation Businesses whose products and services address basic and common needs can enter the bottom of the pyramid market segments more effectively, and with a deeper social impact through partnerships with highly innovative community groups. They can scale their impact significantly by leveraging their expertise and experience in developing skills and engaging such community groups actively in delivering their products and services. This way, communities are better served, if an increasing number of people engaged in the business are people from their immediate neighborhoods, giving it a local flavor and a compelling sense of stake in the business. adds that expansion by multinationals into emerging markets creates new jobsproduct-distribution networks and shops, for exampleand income earned from those jobs ripples through local economies, creating more new jobs, a phenomenon that economists call the multiplier effect. b) Training, Education and Skills enhancement â‚ ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" Profit-seeking companies can also play an important role in educating BOP consumers. Banerjee and Duflo (2007) point out, that BOP consumers can be entrepreneurial and do several different types of jobs. However, due to their lack the skills they can not get higher paying jobs. The provision of funding and training is a way multinationals can support the poor. Education is also necessary not just for getting a job, but to make more informed decisions in other areas, e.g. health education can improve food choices. Besides, education and information can also help BOP negotiate better rates and recognizing counterfeit goods. c) Community Development: Through basic empowerment in terms of education and job creation, the community systematically grows out of the crutches of poverty. Beyond the occasional CSR embarked upon by businesses, empowered indigenes gradually but steadily develop their communities by training other relatives of theirs and embarking on micro projects that eventually add up to improving the lot of their communities. Not only, the company makes more profit, and the peoples lifestyle changes. The poor also benefit because they have access to services such as banking and insurance that once were denied them, he says. 3.2.2. Challenges of Attending Low-income Markets Nevertheless, there is a great branch of the literature about the nature, scope, and value of serving low-income segments (Karnani, 2007a; Martinez and Carbonell, 2007; Aiyar, 2006; Jaswal, 2007) that questions the ease with wich multinationals may enter the BOP and whether profits exist there at all. They argue that it is very unlikely that companies will be able to attend the BOP market profitably. Landrum (2007) points out that the costs of serving this segment can be very high. BOP customers are usually much dispersed geographically; they are very heterogeneous, which reduces the opportunities for obtaining significant economies of scale; and their individual transactions usually represent a low amount of money. In addition, consumers at the BOP are very price sensitive, which, again, makes profitability a difficult goal to achieve. For example, Karnani (2007a) posits that the poor may want the same products as the rich do but by virtue of being poor, they cannot afford them. The differences between business realities and development imperatives are not easy to reconcile, states () Some recent case studies also suggests that unlimited business opportunities and poverty eradication through profits may set unrealistic expectations for business executives (McFalls,2007). Second, the traditional timelines for achieving social goods versus profits differ (Harjula, 2005). Businesses may use a five-year horizon as their benchmark for returns. In contrast, social goals like reducing smoking and other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors may take generations. Thus, rather than viewing the poor primarily as consumers, this group suggest a focus on this segment as producers, i.e.potential entrepreneurs that can improve their economic situation by increasing their income level. Karnani suggests that raising income will alleviate their poverty, provide cost effective products to other consumers, and allow the formerly poor to consume more. Raising their incomes may require that they become producers with stable jobs and wages. Focusing on poor people as self-employed poor people, micro entrepreneurs, Gibson (2007) also suggested that constructing and running micro franchising models that pair franchisors (MNCs or non-governmental organizations), micro franchisors (independent business people) with other poor people to expand the business and get other poor people involved in a self-employment venture can help empower poor people to raise their standard of living and gain a greater degree of financial stability. CONCLUSION It postulates that if companies take the correct steps and devote sufficient resources to satisfying the needs of the BOP, they can overcome barriers to consumption. However, companies must be willing to invest time, resources and training to insure that the producers create products with some barriers to entry and are asonable level of productivity. BOP projects must be integrated into key areas in operations where decisions on new products and markets are made and executed. For most companies, BOP therefore requires comprehensive organizational change and heavy involvement of key business areas responsible for new market creation- something that far exceeds what is required to implement most other sustainability activities. Therefore, while there are potentially compelling reasons for widening the definition of market opportunities beyond consumer goods for low-income segments, the following part of literature review focuses on the BOP concept in its original form, i.e., as a business strategy aimed at selling profit-seeking products to low-income segments while simultaneously contributing to the resolution of significant societal problems in these regions.

The novel is set in Weed and it is very hard to find work and live a living so Lenny and George set them selves of to look for work Lenny on his journey who has a heart of gold would never hurt any one or hurt anything finds a mouse a dead mouse he wants t play and tamper with the mouse but George says no and grabs the mouse and throws the mouse into the bushes but then Lenny gets really upsets and starts crying and shouting out load all I want to do is tamper and play with the mouse because I like tampering animals George says â€Å". Never mind Lenny I will get you a puppy you can tamper and play with† no Lenny says I want a mouse ok then George says what about if we get a job on the farm you cam tamper some rabbits , can I can I said Lenny of course you can just as long as your good and don’t pick up dead mousse which might have dieses and we wont want you catching something. Has Lenny and George carry on with there journey there become hungry and they settle down by the river and they drink the water and then they start a fire and has Lenny collects wood for the fire George prepares the food. George starts getting mad with Lenny and says to Lenny † I bet you if I was on my own I would have a job and nice food but no I am stuck with you moaning all the time can I tamper the rabbits can I tamper the rabbits you just get on my nerves† Lenny gets upset and says â€Å"if you want me to go I will, I will go up in the mountains and find a cave and live in there I will be ok then I wont get on your nerves† no Lenny you will never survive with out me it is best if we stick together. There one more thing I have to tell you if you get in any trouble all I want you to do is to run to this bush here and hide till I come for you ok. Lenny and George carry on with there travels they come to a farm to have a interview for a job they get there and meet up with a man called Candy who is very old and needs very good looking after and takes them to the manager to see if there have the job. They get they job and Lenny and George are very excited but the only thing that keeps coming out of Lennys mouth is â€Å"now can I tend the rabbits† George says if you are good. The job they are given is to pick wheat bags up and stack them on to the carriage but they are very and it takes two men to lift one bag, but then every one is stunned to watch has Lenny picks up one bag all by himself but no one knows how strong Lenny is. George lets Lenny tend the rabbits but has Lenny is tending the rabbits in the barn the managers son Curly HE goes to work and Curly wife follows Lenny into the barn. She starts talking to Lenny telling him that she hates Curly and she hates working here and that she wants to become a Hollywood star and then she asks Lenny what hw would like to do he says have a big house for him and George and have there own business and also he would love to tend the rabbits. But has she was going to reply Curly walked in and says to Lenny â€Å"why are you not doing you work get out there and finish of your job† then George walks in â€Å"what’s happening† says George then Curly and his wife walks out. â€Å"Lenny if you have any trouble of him or any one you tell me† then they all get back to work. George gives Lenny a puppy for his hard work Lenny is very excited and goes in the barn on his own and starts tending the puppy and guess who walks in Curlys wife â€Å"sorry for my husbands behavior† I don’t want to talk to you says Lenny why says Curlys wife , George has told me to stay away from you we don’t want any trouble so go away, but im friendly I only want to make friends â€Å"no† says Lenny. She walks away but seconds later she comes back and then Curly walks in â€Å"I have told you hundreds of times to stay away from my wife† then George walks in again to see Curly hitting and arguing with Lenny, Lenny stays there and George shouts out â€Å"Lenny defend yourself and has Lennys face is pouring with blood and cut eyes half way closed Curly goes to punch him and curlys little hand is trapped between Lennys big hand and Lenny squeezes his hand and hurts Curly badly. Then Lennys says to George â€Å"can I still tend the puppy† â⠂¬Å"of course you can you did nothing wrong† says George. They are getting along with there lives fine carrying on with there work keeping them selves to them selves then Lenny asks George can I tend the puppy George says yea sure, Lenny is in the barn tending the puppy and then he tends the puppy so hard he kills the puppy and then barn door opens so Lenny is frightened so he quickly hides the puppy under the hay, and Curlys wife walks in â€Å"hello† Lenny and she noticed he had hidden something under the hay so she removes the hay to find that Lenny had hidden the puppy and she saw the puppy was dead, Lenny says â€Å"don’t tell George it was an accident. I was tending it to hard † she says ok then she starts to talk to Lenny and she starts to get all emotional with Lenny she goes to kiss him and Lenny kisses her back and then he hugs her but with out him knowing his own strength he was hugging her to tight and he snaps her neck and she dies . Lenny is scared and frightened so he remembers what George said if you are in a lot of trouble run to this bush and hide until I find you so Lenny runs and hides. Curly has noticed that his wife has been killed and he knows who his responsible the first name he say is Lenny and George says how you know Curly says â€Å"look my wife has been killed and Lenny is know where to be seen† we need to find and I am going to kill him â€Å"no† says George you don’t know the whole story. As everyone at the works are looking for Lenny, George goes to the bush and he sees Lenny sitting there, Lenny is very upset and don’t know what to say George says â€Å"I know what you have done† â€Å"it was an accident† Lenny says. Every new coach brought a different approach to coaching. The varying techniques of coaching brought about different attitudes and expectations during practices and games. I found that during practice, coaches had either the nice-guy or the drill sergeant approach. The wines are also sold en primeur, whereby customers may purchase wines far in advance of their bottling and public release. This trade structure is largely the result of three interrelated historical phenomena: Bordeaux’s unique relationship, and robust trade, with England; the arrival of foreign merchants in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; and the chateaux owners’ wealth and social standing. Bordeaux’s wines became destined for greatness when the French Eleanor of Aquitane married the English Henry Plantagenet in 1152. Real Property and Personal Property Real Property is the land itself and any building, trees, soil, minerals, timbers, plants, and other things permanently affixed to the land. Land and buildings are purchased and the owner may use, enjoy, and develop the property as he or she sees fit, subject to any applicable government regulation. Buildings that are constructed on the property are also real property. Personal property is tangible property such as equipment, vehicles, furniture, and jewelry, as well as intangible property such as securities, patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Determining if a mobile home can be used for the office on the new location is important to the client. Therefore we would need to know in each location if the mobile home is considered real property or personal property. Performance Enhancing Drugs Essay The first time I did acid isnt the most interesting time Ive done it, nor the most scary, but I guess it would still be a good read. I was going down to a friends house on a Friday night. Everyone was planning to get majorly fucked up. A lot of people were going to do Dramamine. I read an FAQ on it, and it said if you have Asthma you shouldnt do Dramamine and to be honest, Dramamine seemed pretty nightmarish after reading a few trip reports. So I decided to stick with something I knew: ROBO! I picked up this girl I promised to give a ride to my friends house, and we stopped at the drug store, where I shopped for a nice bottle of Robotussin. I finally settled on generic CVS brand Robo. We hopped in the car, picked up an acquaintance of mine, Zack, and headed down to my friends apartment. It was about an hour drive. We were all psyched because we knew we were going to be getting all fucked up that night. We listened to this local ska/punk band, Heft, and even though I felt like a dork, some Blink-182. I used to like them a lot, then they became famous, and I started feeling like a dork listening to them. ..I told myself that its stupid to just not listen to things because of what other people would think though, and let myself enjoy the music. Besides, it was my tape. 🙂 We saw this weird green lightning bolt while we were driving down. We started thinking maybe theyre be a thunderstorm that night while we were all fucked up, and it would be awesome. After a little while, and a wrong turn or two, we ended up at my friends (well call him Jo) apartment. Some of my friends were there already. There was P, who never does any sort of drugsW, who always tried to get me to take acid, but i was too chicken. ..Jo, who owned the apartment.. .two girls who well call M and Fatty. Z was my acquaintance from the car, and H is the girl who I gave a ride down to the apartment. W told me that P was going to do Dramamine that night. That sort of worried me. P never did drugs, and I wondered if he would be ok, since the Dramamine trip reports I read seemed very disturbing. I was telling W how I was already dreading drinking all that Robo to get fucked up, because obviously, it tastes very bad. He told me that Jo had some acid, and why dont I get some from him. So I did. I got one hit. Z and P ate a bunch of Dramamine. W and Jo had about 2-3 hits of acid each, and some Dramamine. I had my measly hit of acid (hehe!) and H also had one. M ; Fatty were just drinking alcohol. I put the tab on my tongue, and I asked W what I was supposed to do with it. He told me to just swish it around in my mouth a while, and eventually swallow it. I did. Fatty had started to really get on my nerves. She was obnoxious, ugly, ignorant, and just generally reprehensible and obsequious. I had told her days before, if she showed up at Jos apartment (No pun intended) I would drink a bottle of Robotussin and vomit all over her. Fortunately for her, I did acid instead. I started to get a little giddy from the acid, and getting this sort of onion-ish taste in my mouth. W said he hated that taste, but I said I sort of like it, that it reminded me of Ramen Noodle flavor in a way. Things started to look a little brighter and more defined. Jo had this trip program running on his computer. He suggested I look at it. It had little blinking dots on the screen. I looked it at, but nothing seemed to be happening, so I ran up the monitor and stuck my face right up against it. Theory of knowledge Essay Paper I began to worry if wed be able to find our way back. Try to remember the way back, W, I said. Im not sure if Ill remember where I am. Well remember, W said, Just dont talk when were around other people, because well be saying all this crazy shit. Just act normal. It seemed like cops were everywhere. Maybe its because it was a college town and also a Friday night. We got to Dunkin Donuts, and stood in line. I kept feeling like there was no distance between me and the door behind me, and constantly turned around to check to make sure the door wasnt creeping up on me. It would always be much farther away than I thought it was. W grabbed a drink out of the machine to our right while we waited, and figured I better take one too so Id look normal. Ws turn in line came up, and he ordered four egg and cheese crossaints. Alarms went off in my head everywhere. Was he ordering just for himself, or for BOTH of us? I cannot describe to you the terror that engulfed me. What if I walked up next, and ordered MORE croissants, when mine were already ordered? That would seem weird, and theyd look at my dialated pupils, and then theyd smell the reek of Marijuana wafting off of me, and then theyd hogtie me and throw me in the refrigerator until the police came. I decided to take the plunge and order the Croissants. It was a good choice. They were delicious. I had a little trouble focusing on the three items in front of me. Croissant 1, Croissant 2, and my bottle of YooHoo. It seemed like they were all light years apart, even though they werent. It seemed like they were all in their own universe, and I could only deal with one at a time. I worsened the situation by creating a new universe by taking the cap off my Yoohoo bottle and placing it on the counter. It was the most disorienting meal I ever had. As we were walking out, this guy walked by mumbling something, and I mimicked his voice in some funny way. Unfortunately, while I was acting like a loon, I failed to notice a policemen in the parking lot chewing out some kids. This could be trouble, I thought. But I remembered my Jedi Training. I walked calmly past like I was doing nothing wrong. W was more nervous. He kept looking back over his shoulder and walking quickly. He had forgotten the face of his father. We got back in, and Jo wasnt quite so crazy anymore. He started describing his drug experience with us, but my mind was scattered to the four winds, and I had trouble focusing on the conversation at all for more than 10 seconds at a time. Strange things were happening all over the room. Jos smoke detector had turned into a beautiful oriental vase. A river was running through the ceiling, occassionaly forming faces of monsters. I made it stop that and turn back into a normal river. I started pointing my laser pointer at his fridge, and it made weird reflections on the ceiling. I started to see the history of the earth unfold above me in reddish hues. The formation of Earth. the first single celled life forms in the primordial soup. Earthquakesvolcanos. Dinosaurs. Richard Nixon. It was quite entertaining. I finally settled down with my Weezer CD, and drifted off. The music was incredible on the drugs. I sort of stayed in a half awake half asleep the state the whole nite, and woke up the next morning quite burnt. We drove home, and stopped at the pancake house. I got eggs and bacon. I think the eggs were winking at me.
