Poetry from 5 AM This Morning This girl is tired. Verrryyyyyyy tired. I had a lot of ideas for what I wanted to post this weekend. A month into my time at MIT I can finally say I’ve drunk from the firehose and tasted it vicious glory; there’s plenty I could say! And I will say those things eventually, but this past week has been a wild ride. To quantify it: Five hours of sleep per night, on average Four birthdays on my dorm hall (one of them was mine!) Three big-boy exams/midterms Two existential crisis One visitor from home! All of this amazing and terrible chaos culminated in me sitting in my hall’s kitchen at five AM this morning, trying to study for a test I had today and failing pretty miserably. So, for the sake of my sanity, I diverted my attention and ended up writing poetry! I used to do this all the time, but as senior year of high school got busy and other interests took hold, I kind of dropped it. Maybe the exhaustion kickstarted my creative energy? The nice thing is that I don’t really care if it’s good or not. I did it. It felt nice to throw caution to the wind and just do it. After all of last weeks craziness, watching the sun rise with toast in one hand and a pen in the other made me feel human again. It probably hurt me during my test, but I’m okay with that. I literally don’t have the mental capacity to do any other post besides this one. Not right now. So here’s my poem. 5 AM Dark skies and dripping sinks, Dirty kitchen counters,   Hours inhabited by worn faces from the sun’s setting until it’s dawn. I yawn over beat-up mugs,   Mismatched and attached to rusty hooks on the wall. I yawn between speckles of sleep. When I stare into the deep of a clogged garbage disposal   I believe the age-old tale, That owning pieces of the world pales in comparison To having a piece of the world own you.   Fluorescent light; Eyes bright and sometimes bleary. “The Other Side”; A smile wide and muscles weary. Hazy air; A heart prone to tear, so clearly   Held all too captive for its own good. In what remains old reverence blooms. In forgotten faith,   In run-down rooms. There are many teenagers who at a young age dream to become adults because they see adults as people with power and people who are respected, while teenagers feel like no one respects them or takes their opinions seriously. These teenagers dream to become adults, but due to their lack of responsibility and thinking about their actions becoming adults becomes increasingly difficult and while reaching adulthood they struggle greatly. In â€Å"The Man Who Was Almost a Man† by Richard Wright the author presents the power and respect that many teenagers dream to achieve. Richard Wright does this by using equality and beatings to show some of the reasons why some teenagers become obsessed with the idea of power and respect. . To begin with, in â€Å"The†¦show more content†¦Dave mentions that â€Å"he remembered other beatings, and his back quivered† (Wright, 1941, p. 2249) . With this the author shows that Dave’s actions have constantly led him to receive beatings from his father, which shows why Dave wants to reach power and respect. Dave feels that with power no one will dare to beat him. The beatings that Dave received affected him so much that he feels that beatings are for little boys and that he shouldn’t have to be beaten by his father because Dave thinks that he is a man and not a boy. Dave feels that the gun gives him power, and that with the gun not even his father can beat him because Dave believes that with the gun he can shoot anyone he wants. This is very interesting as there have been and there are some people who think that if they have weapons they can use them against anyone they want and whenever they want. The beatings which Dave received by his father lead him to become obsessed with the idea of power and respect and with the gun he feels that he will be powerful and respected. Finally, today there are different views toward power and respect; there are those who reach power and respect with hard work and many years of dedication while there are others who feel that they can have power and respect by getting people to fear them. Language and emotion are very important to human development as it creates identity and perception of the self. In addition, language and emotion are important to socialization and a person’s perception of the world. These messages are taught differently throughout the world and are influenced by the family, community and culture therefore children adapt as a result of their learned experiences (Miller and Mangelsdorf 2005). This paper focuses on research conducted by Kusserow (1999), Fung (1999) and Orellana (2001). The researchers’ methodologies differ greatly but each touches on the approach of socializing children into each culture and subculture’s teachings on acquiring various forms of language and emotion. Kusserow, Fung and Orellana’s work explore different aspects of language and emotion, however, each touches on the subject of socio and ethnocentrism. Western societies, specifically the United States, focus on what things are appropriate to teach children and what is not (Kusserow 1999). However, Kusserow also notes that most of the information derived and generalized to the West really comes from research conducted on middle-class Americans (1999). Fung also agrees with Kusserow’s critique of Western hegemonic culture. She states that Western scholars do not take the time to understand these practices outside of their theoretical bubble. Thus, Western scholars view Chinese shaming practices as problematic and feel that it will negatively impact children’s emotional development. In reality the culture is preventing that from occurring and teaching children how to be functional members of their society (Fung 1999). Orellana (2001) presents comparable dichotomies with Fung and Kusserow’s research. She presents the immigrant experience as being invisible yet being overshadowed by being blamed for taking resources from the rest of society. In her specific research she states that the children are also seen as taking from society but are viewed differently as they do not contribute anything back to society. For college bound students, which there is an abundant from every school, senior year is still an important year that they need to succeed in. These students cannot slack off because they are relying on their final grades to get into college. Seniors cannot just lay back; they need to continue to work hard because colleges may possibly look at their senior grades to see if their work ethic is always the same. If senior year did not exist, junior year would take its place. The author says senior year does very little for maturing and that senior year is not needed. The author argued this by saying, â€Å"Nothing much happened, just the loss of a year when nothing much happens anyhow. If senior year no longer exists, then junior year would soon be a pointless year and nothing would be achieved. People are less mature as juniors, so they will slack off even worse and will not be prepared for college at all. Many argue that seniors just party and slack off waiting for the year to end. Junior year would be the exact same if senior year was taken away. Students would still be excited to leave and therefore, still achieve nothing . Whether it is junior year or senior year, people are still going to treat it like it is their last year and continue to do the things that everybody does during their final year of high school. Many people overlook how important senior year really is. People think that there would be nothing lost if high school only consisted of three years. They think it is a waste of time and therefore, not needed. High school students need to continue to have senior year because it may be their hardest year yet, many colleges still look at senior’s transcripts, and without one more year, junior year would be just like senior year except earlier. THe Metamorphosis of MAlcolm X Essay Malcolm X once wrote, My life has always been one of changes (Haley 404). In his autobiography, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, it is very evident that through his life, he went through a series of drastic changes that went from one extreme to another. He went from being at the bottom of the American white mans society, to become one of the most influential advocates of Black pride (150). Throughout the novel the most evident changes are when Malcolm X moves to Boston, goes to prison, and going on Hajj. After living in Michigan, Malcolm X moves in with his half-sister, Ella, in Boston. When he gets to Boston, he sets out to explore the city and to get the feel of Boston (40). When he looks around the area he is living in he finds it full of nothing but Hill Negroes (40). He notices that all these black people are simply breaking their backs trying to imitate white people (40). He immediately rejects their way of thinking and finds himself in the middle of the towns ghetto section (42). Soon through his friendship with Shorty, Malcolm X is exposed to a new kind of living. He spends his first month in Roxbury with his mouth hanging open (48). He saw small black children shooting craps, playing cards, fighting throwing around swear words and slang expressions (43). Eventually, all this exposure to black people being their natural selves took a great toll on him (43). After hanging out with Shorty and his friends, inevitably, he took his first reefers, first cigarettes, and the first liquor he drank. He ultimately went from being country to a cool cat. When he was exposed to all these jungle streets, he became a hustler and soon began to live like an animal, living only to survive (163). As he became more involved with these people he lost all sense of values and morals. He eventually became a common street hustler, drug dealer, and burglar until he was finally caught and served seven years in jail. Malcolm Xs experience in jail saved him eventually and molded him into the great leader he is known for today. While in prison the first thing that made a positive impression on his life is a fellow inmate named Bimbi. (153). What impressed him the most about this man was the way he was able to command total respect with his words(154). By trying to pursue a friendship with Bimbi, Malcolm X consequentially seeks an education. Through his readings and new found religion, the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X finds self-pride. He starts to become proud of who he is and where he came from. He realizes that before, all he was trying to do was act like someone he wasnt and all it had gotten him was seven years in prison. The letters he got from Elijah Muhammad and his family encouraged all of this. He strives to admit his guilt, and implore the forgiveness of God (170). He would often be startled to catch himself thinking in a remote way of his earlier self as another person and marvel at how much he had changed (170). All the reading he did awoke some long dormant craving to be mentally alive (179). His trip to prison opened up new doors for him because he gained knowledge that made him rethink his niche in life. After he left jail, Malcolm X believed that the black man was superior to the white man and the white man was simply the devil. He preached this to thousands of black people and converted them to the Nation of Islam through his moving speeches that stunned and captivated them. Biography of Cory Booker, Democratic U.S. Senator Cory Booker is an American politician and rising star in the Democratic Party who is considered a likely candidate for president in the 2020 election. He is a former  mayor of Newark, New Jersey, who once considered challenging the most popular governor in the U.S.,  Republican Gov. Chris Christie,  but chose instead to seek election to the U.S. Senate. Booker has taken credit for reviving one of American most notorious failed cities and emerged as one of President Donald Trumps fiercest critics.   Early Years Booker was born to  Carolyn and Cary Booker, both executives at the IBM computer company, on April 27, 1969, in Washington, D.C. He was raised from a young age in Newark, New Jersey, and earned a football scholarship to Stanford University after graduating from Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan, New Jersey, in 1987. He had been a football standout in high school but decided that athletics would be his ticket and not my destination. Booker earned both a bachelors degree political science and masters degree in sociology from Stanford University and an honors degree in history at Oxford University. He was a Rhodes Scholar and completed his law degree at Yale University. Political Career Booker began work  as a staff attorney for the Urban Justice Center, a nonprofit legal-services and advocacy agency in Newark, after earning his law degree. He was stationed in East Harlem at a time when police were aggressively sweeping many of the areas young people into the criminal justice system. Booker was elected to the Newark city council at age 29 and served from 1998 to 2002. In 2006, at age 37, he was first elected Newark mayor and heads the states largest, and perhaps most troubled, city. He was re-elected Newark mayor in 2010. He turned down an offer from President Barack Obama in 2009 to head the newly created White House Office of Urban Affairs Policy.
